In the third instalment of Bet Free Bet's European football preview, we take a look at Italy's Serie A. With a host of recent takeovers by foreign owners, some of Italy's major clubs have begun flexing their financial muscles in the transfer market, but has it helped to transform their fortunes domestically?

Likely Winners – Juventus

The Turin giants look on course to once again lift the Scudetto. A sixth consecutive league title would be a new Serie A record, eclipsing the five in a row won by Juve themselves in the 1920's, the great Napoli side of the 1940's and most recently, Internazionale between 2005/06 and 2009/10.

Juventus have once again been dominant in the league this season, leading the way since match-week five, the lead currently stands at seven points. A combination of a rock-solid defence and the prolific form of Gonzalo Higuain mean Juventus look formidable again.

Surprise Package – Atalanta

Atalanta's summer appointment of Gian Piero Gasperini has proved a huge success, with the former Genoa boss already matching the side's points tally of last season. Despite finishing the 2015/16 season in a lowly 13th position, Gasperini has led his new club to the brink of European qualification.

Underachievers – Internazionale

Despite Inter currently occupying the same fourth position they ended last season in, this season will certainly be seen as one of huge disappointment for the Milan club. Their takeover in the summer by a Chinese consortium was swiftly followed by a huge recruitment drive, vast transfer fees and wages were paid to bring in the likes of Euro 2016 winner Joao Mario, Brazilian wonder-kid Gabriel Barbosa and Italian internationals Eder and Antonio Candreva.

The high expectations, however, failed to materialise and both Roberto Mancini then Frank de Boer has been give the axe from the managerial hot-seat. Former Lazio manager Stefano Pioli is now in charge, and so far his win rate of 68.75% suggests Inter can finally push for another league title next season.
